Vande Mataram

I wanted my first post to be something mellifluous and soul stirring. And I couldn't think of anything but a patriotic song for the same. Vande mataram written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was is a hymn to goddess Durga, personified as the mother land India. The song was denied a National Anthem status by Rabindranath Tagore due to its national festivity and religious references. However, it was pointed out then that though the first two stanzas began with an unexceptionable evocation of the beauty of the motherland, in later stanzas there are references where the motherland is likened to the Hindu goddess Durga. Therefore, INC decided to adopt only the first two stanzas as the national song.

Here's the sheet music for the first two stanzas :)
